What do the fairy dust symbols mean?

June 6, 2015 at 8:18 am | Posted in Articles, Characters, Fairy Dust, Powers and Spells, Winx Club | Leave a comment

When the Winx earned their Enchantix in Season 3, they also unlocked the power of fairy dust. Fairy dust, as has been described in the show, is the dust produced by the wings of fairies. It appears to be around in every fairy form, but when Enchantix is earned, fairy dust becomes significantly more powerful and allows the user to remove dark spells and effects, and miniaturize.

In season 3, we had special sequences for each of the Winx’s fairy dust lockets, where they all drew symbols as part of the process to opening the lockets. For fun, and nostalgia’s sake, I thought we’d investigate what these symbols mean! I’ve never thought about doing it before, but I was rewatching some season 3 episodes, and I figured, hey, some of these look familiar. So let’s get into it. Yep, everybody, “Say What?” is ba-ack! In this not-so-weekly-anymore competition, you comment with a funny caption for a picture we post.

I’ve kind of lost count of the contest posts. 😛 So we’ll just leave this as unnumbered and then resume the count next time. 😀

The Winx Club Timeline

An interesting question was posted over at Una Di Noi – has Nick de-aged the Winx to teenagers again? They certainly seem to be acting like teens!

This got me thinking about something that’s been more than a bit fuzzy as of late in the Winx Club series – the timeline. In most TV shows (happens less in live-action ones) viewers aren’t given a good idea of how much time each season lasts. We’re left to make our own guesses based on information we glean in-show. Glimpse The Elusive Luna!

February 13, 2013 at 9:45 am | Posted in Airings and Dubs, Characters, Luna, Nickelodeon, Seasons and Movies | 4 Comments

There’s a preview of Season 5, Episode 15 out. Guess who we catch a glimpse of?

If you guessed ‘Luna’, then you’re probably right. That’s Stella’s elusive mom, right next to her!

Those who’ve been following the original Italian or Cinelume versions will know that technically, in continuity, Stella is the fairy of the sun and the moon. Her parents are actually separated. Her mother is mentioned a couple of times in the series, and we catch a glimpse of her in Stella’s nightmare in Season 1 Episode 7, but she’s never been featured as a character in the show.

That is, until now. I doubt this is going to be anything more than a minor appearance, maybe for just this episode and the next? The most I’m hoping for is some display of moon-based magic from Stella’s mother (I mean, that would be so cool). Well, at least we get to see her in an episode, at last.

By the way, remember how Nick retconned “Fairy of the Sun and the Moon” to “Fairy of the Shining Sun”? Wonder how they’ll deal with that. 😛

You can watch the episode preview below. Credits to BelieveInWinx for the upload.

PS = Does anyone other than me love Luna’s eyes? :3

Where’s the fight?

[Note: This is a bit of a long rant, and I’ve included lots of videos and everything, hence the read more link.]

The Nickelodeon version of Winx Club has been hyped up a lot (this is something to do with the fact that it’s back in America, on cable TV, and it’s not 4kids), but I don’t honestly think it deserves that hype. Neither do I think it deserves the overzealous praise it’s received from some fans, and nor do I think previous versions of Winx Club, like the Cinelume version deserve the hate some Nick fans are giving them. A Season 5 picture and outfit for Roxy?

I doubt it.

Una Di Noi’s OP got this before I did, and she found this image on deviantART. The person who posted this image on the site claims it’s official stock art, but I don’t think so.

As a comment on the post rightfully pointed out, someone at Rainbow would be breaking a very strict rule by releasing this art for purposes other than promotion before the start of the season, and since Season 5 art for Roxythe season is set to debut in 2012, it’s highly unlikely Rainbow would be engaging in active promotion now. Most companies like to do it a short while before the actual series launches, and the case is probably the same for Rainbow.

Also, you may notice that the model for this drawing is different from the model of what Rainbow actually chooses for it’s fairies. They have a set model from them all. If you want, just compare the final Believix transformation poses for Bloom and Tecna. They’re the same with a reversal of direction.

Since this model of Roxy is plumper and fuller, I don’t think this is official stock art. Also, the fingers are oddly shaped, and the highlights at the end of her hair are gone. Unless, of course, Rainbow has decided to go through a random mood swing and has changed the art without notice. It’s uncommon, though. If they wanted to change their style of drawing, they’d release some of it to see what fans made of it. And we haven’t seen this style in the Season 5 promo video.

Based on all of this evidence, I’m filing this as a rumor and nothing more for now. Let’s wait for an official conformation next year.

Okay, so the OP from Una Di Noi replied to my comment and mentioned the artist claimed the outfit was official, not the model or the picture as a whole.

I’m still going to keep this filed as a rumor, until we get an official conformation. As has been the case with transformations many times before, often, we see a link to a picture that claims an official transformation or outfit in this case, and it turns out to be false.

Only time will tell. We’ve got to be patient, and unfortunately for me, that’s something I’m inherently bad at. 😉

Thoughts on Diaspro vs. Bloom

I was just re-watching the battle between Bloom and Diaspro from Revenge of the Trix of the Nickelodeon Winx Club specials, and I thought I’d post a few thoughts on it.

So, overall, I didn’t like it as much as I liked it in Italian and RAI English. Sure, the animation was smoother, faster, and way better, but it Bloom in Diaspro's ring and Diaspro's gems are destroyed by Bloom. still lacked the quality that came from the originals.

I don’t like the transformations Nick made for the girls, as in the new “Charmix” transformations. My sister and I agree that the original “Winx” transformations were and are way better than the Nick ones.

Aside from the Winx, I liked what Nick did with Diaspro’s transformation very much. It seems more elegant and graceful, and it fits Diaspro much better than what Rainbow originally did with her transformation. One thing I didn’t like was that if you listen carefully while she transforms, you can hear the Winx-transforming-into-Zoomix-from-Season-4 music playing for her transformation. I doubt it would have been hard for them to come up with a score for her transformation, after all, they did manage to come up with a…well, I didn’t like it so much, but a “Charmix” song for the Winx’s transformation.

I liked the animation in the parts where the girls attack each other very much, and the protective shield that Diaspro constructed for herself was absolutely fantastic and way better than the original version. I noticed they thickened and lengthened Bloom’s hair by quite a bit, and honestly, I don’t think the girls need longer hair. xP

As for voice acting, I did not like the random screams and shouts Molly Quinn provided while voicing Bloom fighting. Arianna Grande, however, did not sound like herself at all to me, and that’s what I call a marvelous job of voicing Diaspro. Her voice had that sort of snobbish upper-class air to it, and yet the fury of someone being forced to fight a civilian. Loved it.

The fact that they cut out the little bit of physical fighting between the girls upset me a little, because I think it’s important that they show these girls aren’t all reliant on magic and fairy powers and can actually fight, if only a little bit.

Yep, that’s about it. I’ve embedded the original and the Nick version below for you to compare. The original one is in Swedish and has only a part of the battle, unfortunately, but I think it’s still enough to compare the animations and what they left out/in. (If anyone has a link to a RAI clip, please let me know in the comments.)

Winx Club shouldn’t have another new fairy.

October 26, 2011 at 5:53 pm | Posted in Bloom, Characters, Flora, Layla, Musa, Ramblings and Musings, Roxy, Season 1, Season 2, Season 3, Season 4, Season 5, Seasons and Movies, Secret of the Lost Kingdom, Stella, Tecna, Uncategorized, Winx Club | 11 Comments

Winx Club has evolved over the years. Those of us who’ve been with the series since the very beginning have seen it happen in front of our eyes. The outfits, the transformations, the hair, the animation style…everything changes, because if anything stays stagnant, the series will become boring.

Another thing that’s changed along with all of this is the number of fairies. Recall. In the beginning, when Bloom formed the Winx, we only had five fairies. Bloom, Stella, Flora, Musa, and Tecna. A small bunch aiming to stop evil from taking over Magix.

Along came Aisha. (I just realized something: I never did call her Layla, but that’s for another post.) Just over one season, the girls had become so close to one another that it was hard for some of them (ahem, Stella) to welcome a new member to their group. Bloom has to once again clearly state that Aisha is a member of the Winx. And there we go. Six fairies now.

We then had the third season, and the movie, during which we see how strong the bond between the girls has become and how they are willing to do anything, even kind of die, for their friends. For those that don’t understand, this fact is most apparent when we see Tecna, who isn’t even from Andros, walk herself into danger to close the portal to the Omega Dimension to save Aisha’s planet. In doing so, she doesn’t die, but earns her Enchantix.

And then came the fourth season. Along with that came Roxy, the “last” fairy on Earth. Roxy brought a different kind of personality into the Winx club, a fun, stubborn, and rebellious one, kind of like a mash up of the personality of certain girls. We still do not have an official confirmation that she’s a member of the Winx Club, and I wouldn’t like to suppose anything, because I don’t do that.

If she is a member of the Winx Club, that would bring the total to seven fairies. And that, I think, is a warning bell for Rainbow.

You know how you can put some pebbles into a jar and have it half-full? You can keep adding more and more pebbles, but there comes a time where when and if you add more, that jar is just going to overflow. You can’t push it anymore.

I think it’s a bit like that with Winx Club. I think Rainbow has crammed enough people with enough different and sometimes clashing personalities into one group, increasing it from a mere five to not-massive-and-yes-only-two-more-but-that-still-makes-a-difference seven.

I was thinking this out the other day…and I’ve come up with a few major reasons another fairy shouldn’t be introduced into Winx Club.

Screentime is a huge issue with a show with as many characters as Winx Club. We have the Winx, which have kept growing throughout the seasons, we’ve got the Trix, we’ve got the Specialists, we’ve got our villians…the list goes on and on, doesn’t it? You’ll notice that most of the time, the series focuses on the Winx entirely, and if another new fairy was brought into this group of seven (assuming Roxy’s one of the Winx), how on earth would the people at Rainbow focus enough on each of the girls?

Character development and characterization is somewhat related to the above topic. If they can’t focus enough on each of the girls, they can’t have character development. Each fairy in the Winx has their own personality, and we know most of their personalities. However, you can see that it varies. We know Tecna’s highly logical and doesn’t like showing emotion, and we have seen few instances where she does. But to me, it still appears as though she’s a character with the emotional range of a teaspoon. There’s something we haven’t had enough development on.

Backstory is something I feel the producers, writers, and pretty much the entire team at Rainbow have been partial on. We know a lot about Bloom. In fact, I’d say we know way too much. The entire series revolves around her. You know, I can say frankly that when the first season ended, I was afraid we were heading to Mary-Sue status. But thankfully, the Charmix and Enchantix stopped that just in time. Do we know about Flora? Tecna? We know about Musa’s parents and her childhood, but that’s pretty much it. We know Stella’s mother’s name was Luna…and that’s it.

Do you think it’s alright if another fairy is introduced into the Winx Club? If not, why?
